The carnation (Dianthus barbatus) belongs to the carnation family and is native to East Asia and Eastern Europe. This plant needs a location with full sun to develop its lush flowers. Even in partial shade, there will be a reduction in flowering and plant growth. Furthermore, this perennial plant prefers permeable soil rich in humus. It is therefore a good idea to enrich the soil a few weeks before planting. Granulated horse manure or garden compost can be used for this purpose.

Watering
Regular watering is essential, especially during the germination phase. Once it is fully grown, the dianthus barbatus becomes less demanding and is even quite robust, but it should still not be left completely unattended on hot summer days.
However, you should avoid allowing the plant to become waterlogged, regardless of its growth stage! Especially in the winter months, you need to ensure good soil drainage, otherwise the plant may die.
