The olive tree, Olea europaea, is an attractive, slow-growing perennial plant of Mediterranean origin.
It forms a rounded head of small gray-green leaves and is tolerant of hot, dry conditions.

Ideal Temperature

Originating from warm temperate to tropical regions, the olive tree will thrive in temperatures above 10℃, with 13-15℃ being ideal for growth. It will struggle in harsh winter conditions, and if the temperature drops below -10℃, although the tree may survive, it may be damaged.

Watering

Native to the Mediterranean basin, the olive tree is adapted to periodic droughts and prefers well-drained soil that mimics its native arid conditions. This species thrives in moderate moisture and has evolved to utilize water efficiently, making it relatively drought tolerant. Watering should be done once every 1-2 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out between sessions. As a perennial plant commonly grown outdoors, the olive tree’s ability to retain its foliage year-round is indicative of its efficient use of water and resilience in varying climates.

Light

Olive trees thrive in full sunlight conditions, benefiting from exposure to bright, direct light for optimal photosynthesis that stimulates growth and fruit production. Although olive trees tolerate partial sunlight, reduced light intensity can lead to less vigorous growth and lower yields.

Soil

The ideal soil for olive trees would be a well-drained fertile loam-based soil with a pH of 5.5-7.5. However, as long as the soil is light without extreme pH, olive trees can still thrive even in poor soil. Heavy soils are not preferable as they can become waterlogged and lead to root rot.

Other Information

Used by mankind since the time of the first humans, the olive tree is a tree of historical, religious and cultural value to many peoples. Its main use, however, continues to be concentrated on the oil extracted from its famous fruit, the olive. Both are extremely popular in world cuisine, but olive oil is also a common ingredient in many cosmetic products.
