The syngonium is a plant with showy leaves that produces small white flowers. It is easy to care for and can be grown indoors. However, it is important to be careful, especially when handling it: its sap is toxic. The syngonium io has a very interesting feature: as the plant ages, its leaves change shape. When young, they look like hearts and arrows; when mature, they are full of indentations.

Difficulty Care

Easy

Ideal Temperature

Syngonium, which is native to tropical forests, is not hardy and likes a warm and humid growing environment. It is mainly grown indoors. To maintain good growing conditions, the room temperature should be between 16 and 29℃.

Watering

Native to humid tropical forests, syngonium thrives in environments that mimic this moisture-rich habitat. Its watering habits include a preference for consistent moisture, making it somewhat sensitive to drought. To maintain its lush foliage syngonium requires weekly watering.

Light

Syngonium thrives in full shade, which provides optimal light for robust growth and health. Although it favors lower light intensity, syngonium demonstrates tolerance to partial sun, adapting well to brighter conditions to some extent. However, too much direct sunlight can cause leaf burn, while insufficient light can result in poor growth and reduced leaf variegation. Ideally, syngonium should be placed indoors near a north-facing window or outdoors in a location with diffused light.

Soil

Syngonium prefers acidic soil with rich humus and good drainage with a pH value between 5.5-6.5. The soil should be kept moist, especially in spring and summer.

Other Information

Syngonium podophyllum 'White Butterfly' is a climbing plant in the Araceae family, known as aroids, which includes many other species of houseplants such as Monstera, Anthurium, and Philodendron. Many varieties have variegated leaves, to a greater or lesser extent. Like other aroids, the shape of the leaves changes as they grow and age. It is common for the arrow-shaped leaves of the syngonium to change to more lobed and divided leaves over time.
This plant is a vigorous climber, which can grow up to almost 2 meters in height, when supported on a support, or hanging from a hanging pot.
